The pair went to San Lorenzo Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge, London, Thursday for lunch, according to reports.

The couple broke up due to Getty's stalling over his divorce proceedings with ex-wife Rosetta Millington that angered Miller, while her constant partying habits were not liked by the actor.

Distributor: 20th Century Fox
Release Date: November 26, 2008
Writer: Baz Luhrmann, Ronald Harwood

Movie review:

Up to now, no movie was big enough to hold director Baz Luhrmann's overflowing emotions -- not the maniacal jukebox of "Moulin Rouge!," not even Shakespeare's young lovers in "Romeo + Juliet."

With "Australia," a grand epic set in Luhrmann's native country, Luhrmann finally should have found a subject as big as his use-every-crayon-in-the-box sensibility. Instead, the opposite happens: The massive panoramas of wild Australia suddenly make Luhrmann's wild flourishes look puny.

The story begins in September 1939. While the rest of the world goes to war, English aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley (played by Nicole Kidman) flies to Australia -- using a retro-cool spinning globe, as in "Casablanca" -- to find out what's happened with her husband's cattle station, Faraway Downs. She discovers that her husband has been killed, and Faraway Downs is threatened by the beef baron King Carney (Bryan Brown), who holds a monopoly over most of the Northern Territory.

After watching the cattle station's foreman, Fletcher (David Wenham), abuse his Aboriginal mistress (Ursula Yovich) and their half-caste son, Nullah (newcomer Brandon Walters), Lady Sarah becomes determined to rescue Faraway Downs by driving 1,500 head of cattle north to the port city of Darwin. To do that, she enlists the aid of The Drover (Hugh Jackman), a rugged cowboy who refuses to settle down. Of course, the rough-hewn Drover and the porcelain-fine Lady Sarah will disagree -- and, because Luhrmann is such a lover of classic movie tropes, you know what will happen next.

The thing about "Australia" is that you always know what will happen next, because Luhrmann (writing with "Collateral's" Stuart Beattie, "The Pianist's" Ronald Harwood and Aussie novelist Richard Flanagan) employs all the old movie clichés: lovers from opposite sides of society, underdogs battling corrupt power and racial prejudice, set against the backdrop of cataclysmic history -- in this case, the Japanese bombing of Darwin, not long after Pearl Harbor.

For much of "Australia's" running time, Luhrmann gets away with it. He can burnish even the oldest cliché into something shiny and new. The sweeping views of the Outback and of Jackman's pecs are equally stunning, and we're swept along with the whole enterprise. You even nod with approval at Luhrmann's audacity for cribbing from "The Wizard of Oz" in his depiction of his Land of Oz, Australia, as a magical place over the rainbow.

Somewhere after the two-hour mark, with 45 minutes to go, you wonder if Luhrmann can tame this beast. In the end he can't, and Australia proves itself a land too big to be tamed by a mere moviemaker.

Milk movie review

Cast: Milk
Genre: Biography, Drama
Starring: Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna, James Franco, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn,
Director: Gus Van Sant
Producer: Bruce Cohen, Dan Jinks, Michael London
Distributor: Focus Features
Release Date: November 26, 2008 (limited)
Writer: Dustin Lance Black

Movie Review:

"Milk" is the story of Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), a gay activist in the 1970s, who was assassinated along with San Francisco's Mayor Moscone (Victor Garber) by another disgruntled city supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin). Harvey Milk knows he is a historical figure, and makes a tape recording chronicling his life; and here, he narrates the film.

Harvey's story begins when he decides to open a camera shop on Castro Street with his cute boyfriend, Scott Smith (James Franco). Soon the camera store becomes a hub for the outcast gay community and gay activism. Harvey works for eight years to be finally elected to public office with the help of his devoted friends, Cleve Jones (Emile Hirsch, who starred in director Sean Penn's "Into The Wild"); campaign manager Anne Kronenberg (Alison Pill) and others. When long-suffering Scott leaves Harvey, he takes up with an indulgent, young man, Jack Lira (Diego Luna).

Availing himself of archival footage, Van Sant (who directed the insufferable "Gerry" and the shot-for-shot remake of "Psycho" that was doomed before filming even began with the casting of too big Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates and sexless Anne Heche as Marion Crane) leaves nothing to cinematic dramatization. It all looks and sounds real. "Milk" is a compelling, important story and well directed. However, it is Sean Penn that galvanizes and inhabits the persona of Harvey Milk.

If you are a Sean Penn fan, you will see how truly brilliant an actor he is. (I forgive him the unintentional funny "I Am Sam".) Every movement, phrase, look, and desire is true to the character. Penn has transformed himself into Harvey Milk. He leaves nothing of Sean Penn on the screen. He appears small and fragile, and gives Harvey Milk a charismatic presence that allows you to believe he was the spark that mobilized S.F.'s gay community. Outwardly gay, Harvey eclipsed into a crusader and refused to be swayed or play the political game of "one hand washes the other".

Unlike Will Smith, who was hired and paid to play a gay hustler in "Six Degrees of Separation" but refused to kiss another man as required by the script, Penn does not hesitate to play a sexually active, modern gay man. In fact, it is rather shocking. Van Sant doesn't shy away from the reality of the 1970s Castro Street hedonistic lifestyle. There is no moralizing here.

And what of Dan White? Incredibly, one sympathizes with him. Not as a killer, but the position he found himself in up against the media darling that had become Harvey Milk. If only Harvey had been more sensitive to the conundrum of Dan White and given him a crumb from his banquet table. But Harvey had no patience for massaging Dan White's ego. I have intimately known many, many gay men. I understood Harvey Milk's cruel indifference to Dan White.

The fact that the script, director and especially Josh Brolin allow us to see Dan White as a conflicted character is a credit to them. Unfortunately, Dan White's "Twinkie Defense" and insignificant prison sentence brings the audience back to Harvey Milk and the injustice of his death.

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 · 0 comments

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to be conferred the Malaysian title of ‘Datuk’, akin to the British knighthood, on Dec 6 and he is expected to receive the honour in traditional Malaysian attire. The traditional Malaysian black costume with a waistband, a songkok and a black cap is the official attire to receive the award from the Malaccan royal chief, Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.

The actor will receive his Darjah Mulia Seri Melaka award at a ceremony at 10 a m at Dewan Seri Negri, Ayer Keroh, in the presence of 1,000 invited guests, The Star newspaper said on Tuesday. The actor, who was to have received the award on Saturday, had to reschedule his trip due to his tight working schedule. He is scheduled to be in Malaysia for three days.

State Secretary Omar Kaseh confirmed that Shah Rukh would be in Malacca for a day.

The actor is immensely popular among Malaysians and had shot the film one 2 ka 4 and a song sequence from his blockbuster Don in Malacca.

His being conferred the Datukship had stirred up much controversy with many questioning whether he really deserves it. Critics had asked what Shah Rukh had done for Malaysia to deserve a Datukship. They also took up cudgels on behalf of local artistes.

Malaccan authorities, however, say Shah Rukh’s shoot in Malaysia had benefitted the country immensely, giving it global publicity without any money being spent. Indian films are popular in Malaysia that has an estimated 2.6 million ethnic Indians.

The actor's latest turn as the suave secret agent, Quantum of Solace, proved a huge hit with fans and critics alike, shooting to number one at the Britain and US box offices - enjoying the most lucrative Bond film opening in history.

However, according to sources, the British actor has promised the next film in the successful franchise will involve more intimate scenes.

"For Bond to jump in bed with 10 women would contradict the whole things. But in the next movie everybody wants it, (saucy scenes) so we're going to have it," he said.

Hayden to play in CL T20 for Chennai Super Kings

Monday, November 24, 2008 · 0 comments

Hayden will have Michael Hussey as his company in Chennai Super Kings team while another member of the Australian Test squad — Peter Siddle — will represent Victoria Bushrangers in the Twenty20 tournament which is wedged between the series against New Zealand and South Africa. “Cricket Australia has endorsed their participation, that’s the way the modern game goes. We’ve just got to deal with it like we do when we’ve got players who are a bit sore or a bit tired on the road,” Nielsen said.

To ensure that Australian and South African players represent their domestic T20 teams in the Champions League, Cricket Australia, which has a 25 per cent stake in the tournament, has delayed the Perth Test until December 17. South Africa will be represented by Titans and Dolphins in the Champions League Twenty20.

“We have to understand the changing nature of the game, that this is what is going to happen to ensure the game keeps generating money and getting people involved and kids wanting to watch it,” Nielsen was quoted as saying in ‘The Age’. “From my point of view, the Australian team and international cricket will always be the number one commitment, but it’s not as simple any more as just saying that means we have our lead-up and everything else is put on the backburner,” he added.

There is no justice in jail: Sanjay Dutt

Sunday, November 23, 2008 · 0 comments

Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt, who has been behind bars on four occasions in the last 17 years, says "everything is injustice in jail" due to the prison manual dating to the days of British colonial rule.

The outdated rules and regulations make prisoners "dehumanized...less like human beings", according to Dutt.

"Everything is injustice in jail. It is (expected to be) a reformatory centre. It's not a place where you turn an innocent man into a criminal but that is what happens in the jails in our country," Dutt said while speaking at a leadership summit here on Saturday.

The interactive session was titled "Leadership Lesson from Munnabhai" after Dutt's iconic character from the hit films Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

"The jail manual is 100 years old and it has not been changed till today. That (the manual) was for the British to prosecute the Indians, break our will and treat us like dogs and that has continued."

The versatile actor also spoke from the heart and narrated his own experiences behind bars.

"I was locked up on Independence Day from noon till seven the next morning despite wanting to celebrate it. The jail manual says that prisoners shouldn't be locked up on any holiday.

"When I asked for a spoon with the usual mug and plate that you get there, I was told that there is no such provision in the jail manual. It (the manual) was (meant) to break the Indians down by the British. These things should change now," he said.

"I couldn't meet my spouse (Manyata - though they were not married then). A person who is convicted can meet his spouse only once a month and that too because mine was a special request I got to meet her alone - unlike others where 20 prisoners meet their families in one room. I could meet my lawyer (Satish Maneshinde) only for a brief moment and that too in my cage and I couldn't talk as I had cops standing all around."

Manyata, who was also present at the summit, nodded and also shared with the audience her travails.

While in jail, Dutt, true to his image of Munnabhai, a lovable rogue, also took up cudgels on behalf of other inmates.

"I was with some sardars in jail and there was a guy called Pyada Singh. He was there for nine years under trial. He was caught for possession of a firearm for which he had a license. I called his lawyer to my court (during my hearing) and I warned him about going to the press and he got bail. The lawyer was making money all this while," Dutt recalled amid applause from the audience.

Dutt was convicted for illegally possessing arns in the run-up to the 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai. Soon after the blasts, he was arrested and jailed for 18 months.

Dutt candidly admitted that it was not easy for him to fight on his own at the time of his last imprisonment last year - unlike his previous experiences in prison when he was backed by his late father, actor and MP Sunil Dutt.

"As long as dad was alive, I knew he'll be there for me. But this time, when I went to jail there was no dad and I realized that I was the oldest in the family and I have to work around and thanks to my wife and family, I could," he observed.

Winona Ryder hospitalised

Friday, November 21, 2008 · 0 comments

American actress Winona Ryder was rushed to hospital after she fell ill on a flight to London.

The 37-year-old actress was treated for an unidentified illness at Heathrow Airport immediately after her plane touched down just after noon, the Daily Mail reported.

The actress was taken to Hillingdon Hospital after a priority landing by the captain of the British Airways flight on Wednesday, it said.

Ryder's publicist, Mara Buxbaum has refused to confirm the nature of the star's illness last night but said the actress was discharged an hour later "in good health".

"She did fall ill on a plane and as a precautionary measure they took her to hospital. She was there for an hour. She's in good health. There's no drama," she added.

A spokesman for British Airways said: "The captain of BA282, which was travelling from LA to Heathrow, requested a priority landing as a female passenger required medical attention."

Ryder has acted in films like Edward Scissorhands and Little Woman but her career has seen a decline after her involvement in a series of controversial incidents.

The Oscar nominated actress has been found guilty of shoplifting from a department store. She was also arrested for possessing drugs. The star was also involved with actor Johnny Depp. Ryder was engaged to Oceans Eleven star Matt Damon before they split in 2001.

Thenavettu movie review

thenavattu000002

Thenavattu was most worst movie of Jeeva's flim carrier which was directed by V V Kathir and produced by the Sun Pictures. The director is responsible for a half-baked script that manages to destroy even Jeeva's credibility. This flick is all aruvaal and no brains. Which makes us frustrate at the starting ten mintues itself and i prefer all you to better not watch this movie at any cost.

The movie starts with as an aruvaal blazes across the screen accompanied by Srikanth Deva's Kuthu score, you know what's in store for you. You just don't dare believe it, because this is Jeeva after all and you know the lad rarely disappoints. Well, turns out he's smeared a ton of coal in your face: this is the kind of movie newly minted star-sons usually make their 'entry' in; the kind any actor worth his salt will look back on and remember with acute embarrassment. Someone's obviously advised the character artist to make a dashing commercial film -- and the net result is an unintentional laugh-riot cum yawn-fest that leaves you stunned at its ridiculous treatment.

Not that you expect it to be this bad when Kailasam (Ravi Kale), the somber bigwig is performing the last rites of some one dear to him -- but the appearance of Kottai (Jeeva), first in the chaotic Koovagam festival and later atop a Veeranam pipe, swinging a scythe maniacally sets the tone for the rest of the film.Cut to the flashback a few months ago: it is with relief that you welcome a rural scene, somewhere in Madurai (they show you four temple towers -- and you've got to assume it is the temple town), where Kottai's mother (Saranya Ponvannan) is cutting down logs, and boasting about her son: he's a god who deserves to see the outside world and derive its benefits.

And so Kottai journeys to big bad Chennai in company with Vellaiyan (Kanja Karuppu), who dances with every karagattam dancer on the roadside, makes lewd jokes and appears to have only one thing on his mind. They end up at the massive home of Kailasam, the local terror who slices up people whenever he can only, our heroes are unaware of the fact.

It's a bit endearing when they go on thinking that all Kailasam does is cut up trees, which is why he requires their aruvaal -making skills. And so Kottai goes to work -- but the director needs to show that underneath the rippling muscles and rowdy mannerisms lies a child's heart. So you have Kottai feeding crying children milk, helping men with epileptic seizures and falling in love with the first fair-complexioned, slim beauty he comes across, Gayatri (Poonam Bajwa.

Naturally, Gayatri, as the heroine, is also a wonderfully kind-hearted girl, who wears revealing saris, teaches music to students (though it's obvious she knows nothing about it), and mouths inane dialogues to blind beggars that bore you out of your wits. Kottai's logic for falling in love with her is that she treats him like his own family you, as the viewer, know better.

Meantime, there's yet another villain, Santhosh, Kailasam's son, who goes playing musical instruments, mouthing punch lines and raping women left, right and centre. There's also a remarkably stupid and one-dimensionally portrayed minister and a helpless, frustrated cop Surya Prakash (with a terribly dubbed voice) who simply stands like a rock in uniform. Naturally, Santhosh goes on raping women, Surya Prakash goes on standing still; Kottai goes on making aruvaals . until Santhosh's catches sight of the ravishing Gayatri, touches her inappropriately and all hell breaks loose.

There are two redeeming features in this remarkably silly tale. One is Jeeva himself -- he's incapable of performing badly no matter how stupid the role, and turns the most cliched dialogues into bearable ones. Despite being hampered by commercial masala at every turn, he makes some sort of an impact when he tries to woo Poonam, and later, brandishes his aruvaal.

The other is the short interlude with the transgenders at the Koovagam festival. Instead of dismissing them with Tamil cinema's usual insensitivity, they've been shown as proper human beings. Kudos for that. Kanja Karuppu is at his lewdest here and needs to capitalise on his post Subramaniyapuram popularity before everything goes down the drain.

You've seen Poonam Bajwa perform much better than this in Seval and that's the only reason you don't dismiss her as just another mindless heroine. Hopefully, she'll get better roles. The rest have been reduced to cardboard characters who yell, scream, cut people down and promise vengeance every two minutes.

To cut a long story short, better don't watch this movie and waste your money. It is the most awful and worst movie i have seen in this year so far.

Slumdog Millonaire, a film about an Indian game show starring Anil Kapoor and Dev Patel, was released in the US this week and registered the highest average of any movie during the first weekend.

Fox Searchlight's Slumdog Millonaire grossed $418,000 since it opened Nov 12 in 10 theatres in six cities -- New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Chicago and Toronto. The weekend gross was $350,434, with per-theatre average of $35,043. This is the highest average gross by far for any film at the box office.

Following an overwhelming response, a company release said that the film would this week expand to 32 theatres from 10. This includes its release in 10 more cities - Baltimore, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and Vancouver.

Based on the novel Q&A by Vikas Swarup, an Indian diplomat, the movie is set in Mumbai and made by British director Danny Boyle. It is the story of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life.

With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering Rs.20 million on India's Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? show.

But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Freida Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions.

The film has received some rave reviews in the US media. It was the winner of the 2008 Toronto Film Festival People's Choice Award.

Witherspoon too short for Vaughn

Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon was too short for her co-star Vince Vaughn in the movie Four christmases, as became clear when he had to pick her up for a few dancing scenes. According to reports that they had to be creative in solving the height problem.

She said: "He's 6'5" and I'm 5'2". We had a really funny scene, I don't know if it's in the film any more, where he rolls over onto me. We were in bed and then at the very end he rolls over and goes to sleep, but he rolls over and lays on top of me. It was like a tree trunk had just landed on me. I kept going, 'Tim-berrrrr!' It was really funny.

"It was a challenge, especially the kissing scenes. It was hard to get up there to kiss him but we worked it out.

"And he had to pick me up for half the dancing. He's actually holding me in the air so we can stay in the same frame. He's a fantastic dancer. A very, very good dancer, which you'd probably figure from Swingers. They were teaching us dance moves. I just couldn't keep up and he was like, 'Oh, it's a one-two cha cha cha'."

Fur-clad Lindsay Lohan flour bombed

Sunday, November 16, 2008 · 0 comments

Actress Lindsay Lohan was pelted with a flour bomb on arrival at a Paris nightclub wearing a fur stole.

Animal rights activists showered the 22-year-old actress with flour when she went to the VIP Room Theater in the early hours of Saturday with her friend, disc jockey Samantha Ronson.

The owner of the nightclub helped Lohan dust off her blue sequined dress and black stole before she posed on the red carpet. Ronson went on to spin tracks for a crowd that included reggae rapper Shaggy and 'I Kissed a Girl' singer Katy Perry.

Excerpts from PETA's blog post:

"Lindsay Lohan s tan turned noticeably paler tonight after an anti-fur activist showered her with flour at a nightclub in Paris. Lindsay was on her way into the VIP room on the Champs-Elys es just after 1 a.m. early Saturday when she had an entire bag of flour dumped over her head."

"When Lindsay was named to PETA's annual Worst-Dressed List earlier this year, her entry read: 'I Know Who Killed Me isn't just the title of Lindsay Lohan s latest bomb, it's the cry of the animals snuffed out so that this 'mean girl' can pose in their pelts. Lindsay, there s no road to recovery for the foxes who are anally electrocuted so that you can look skanky.'"

Varanam Aayiram Movie Review

Friday, November 14, 2008 · 0 comments

Varanam Aayiram - Memoirs of a heart with abounding memories

The film designed as a tribute to Goutham Vasudev Menon’s father comes across as emotions spelt out in a reserved manner and thereby proves to be a tame affair. One can understand the director’s angst at losing a parent, and trying to make a film about the loss, but then the man’s (father) enigma never takes center stage throughout the film. Probably the biggest drawback of the film.

The narration of the film has been designed to follow a ‘classic approach’. Unfortunately, all the ingredients that go into the making of a classic are missing thereby making the screenplay stagnate at times to irritable proportions. All films that have been successful in being called classics portray enduring human emotions that can be related with instantaneously. Goutham has most definitely missed the plot with ‘Varanam Aayiram’ giving more emphasis to incidents rather than connecting them well. The story follows the lead characters (the protagonist and his father) through decades. Much effort has been taken to bring out authenticity to the ‘period’ effect which is praiseworthy.

The story starts off with a senior citizen Krishna (Suriya) getting his hair trimmed in a saloon only to die after reaching home. The news is conveyed to his son, Major Suriya (Suriya) who is part of a rescue mission. With gritty determination, the young man declares he wants to go ahead with the mission. But the son in him overwhelms the Major that he is and events of his life unfold as flashes in his mind.

What a fantastic dad he had had! The story is narrated through montage sequences – the time his father had met his mother in college (as told to him by his mother) and the innovative way he had made known his love for her – his birth and the way he had always looked up to his dad as a real hero – his sister’s birth and the happy little family that they were – his peek at adolescence – his misadventures and the moment he was engulfed by the electric sensation of love etc.

Suriya’s adolescent days come across as a breath of fresh air. The antiques he indulges in once he sees Megna (Sameera Reddy) on a night train and his train of thought that goes on in his mind to woo her, gets across to the audience very well.

After the interesting introduction, the determined Suriya goes to her house to see her. Megna is surprised but then is not convinced that his love for her is true. She reveals her plans to study in America and her preparations to leave in a week’s time.

The happy-go-lucky Suriya does some business and using the gift of being a good guitarist makes money. And then he is off to America, not for a career, not for studies but to win his girl’s heart and marry her. They do meet in America and the interesting character that he is wins Megna’s heart. An unfortunate incident happens and Megna dies.

A reckless Suriya then starts smoking, drinking and becomes a horrible drug addict. His parents take care of him through these torrid times. His parents even want him to go away somewhere to find himself and come back as the person that he really is.

Suriya walks the streets of Kashmir and Delhi and even indulges in daring endeavors like rescuing a kidnapped child. Then the military bug bites him and he joins the armed forces. It is about this time that the director has made maximum usage of his good looks and the famous six-pack ab. After six years in the armed forces, he becomes a major and also has loving thoughts of a girl (Priya played by Divya Spandana) he had known for a long time but had really not given any kind of attention to. Does time wither away the association they had had?

The flashes of reminiscence stops and reality dawns….he is part of the rescue mission now, fighting terrorists….

The earthly presence of his father might have gone away forever….but will always have a home in his heart….probably thoughts that Goutham Vasudev Menon has….

Suriya the actor rocks throughout. The variety of emotions he has portrayed is very good and a strong mention has to be made about his good looks and charm. He looks unbelievably like a person in his early twenties in some sequences that require him to be so. Something very few actors can really do.

Harris Jayaraj has rendered a beautiful set of songs with this film. The Background score is good in patches and compliments the brilliant cinematography by Rathnavelu. The cinematographer needs special mention for a refreshing tone which he has infused especially in the youthful sequences.

Sameera Reddy has been casual and fits the role aptly. Simran has garnered all her experience and does justice. Divya Spandana with her girl-next-door looks performs a role that lightens up a depressed protagonist with good effect.

One gets the feeling Goutham could have used all of Suriya’s efforts with a better narration AND with all-round emotions to connect all the incidents in the script which would have made it more interesting.

Dostana Movie Review

Thursday, November 13, 2008 · 0 comments

Love triangle in Hindi movies often centre around two guys falling in love with the same girl, or two girls choosing to love the same guy. But DOSTANA is a first. It’s the first hindi film that, at the core, is a rectangle [three men loving the same woman], but two of them, guys in this case, pretend to be a couple.

Sure, DOSTANA has ample shock-value since what has been witnessed in its promos is barely a fraction of what you’d get to watch in the movie. But more than shock-value, the film offers loads of fun-n-laughter and dollops of entertainment in those 14 reels.

A word of appreciation! It requires courage to fund a project like DOSTANA. Karan Johar, the producer, deserves to be lauded for treading the untrodden path. It requires courage and conviction to swim against the tide in your directorial debut. Tarun Mansukhani, the debutante, deserves a few brownie points extra for not thinking straight. It requires courage for two A-list actors to go all out and risk their professional [and personal] lives. Abhishek and John deserve an ovation for not only agreeing to play these characters, but also infusing life in them, without making a mockery of the gay community. It’s not a serious take on homosexuality either. On the contrary, it’s a madcap comedy where two straight men pretend to be gays. Although DOSTANA is a mainstream commercial film, it dares to push the envelope in its own way. It brings homosexuality out of the closet, gives it respect and dignity and doesn’t treat gays as ‘abnormal’.

To cut a long story short, DOSTANA is not to be missed. Dharma Productions, the late Yash Johar and Karan Johar’s film production outfit, has produced several significant films in the past. Add DOSTANA to the list!

Miami is the setting for DOSTANA. When Sameer [Abhishek Bachchan] and Kunal [John Abraham] are turned down for an apartment because the landlady [Sushmita Mukherjee] doesn’t want two strapping young men to corrupt her young sexy niece Neha [Priyanka Chopra], they hatch a plan: they pretend to be gay to secure the apartment.

Over a period of time, Sameer, Kunal and Neha become buddies. When Neha’s boss Abhimanyu [Bobby Deol] enters the fray as the third contender for her affections, it gets even hotter…

DOSTANA shocks you all the while and that is its biggest USP. Don’t expect stereotypical situations or characters all through this film. Watch Abhishek cook up a romantic story between John and him in Venice. Watch Boman Irani’s interaction with Abhishek and John. Watch Kirron Kher’s dramatic entry at this point. Howlarious scenes all, they’re sure to bring the house down.

If the first hour is laced with crackling chemistry between the guys and terrific humour, things get serious towards the second half since there’s one more person vying for Priyanka’s attention — Bobby Deol. There’s humour in this hour too, but the focus is mainly on who’d get Priyanka in the end.

The length is a slight deterrent in the second half and the editor could’ve easily cut the unwanted flab to make the narration in shape. But the film works as a package! Also, the film has a shocking end and people are bound to raise eyebrows. It would have its share of advocates and adversaries. A debatable culmination, for sure!

Director Tarun Mansukhani is here to stay. He deserves kudos for choosing an offbeat story, then making a foolproof screenplay and most importantly, executing it with flourish. DOSTANA merges form and content beautifully, since the film is, technically speaking, sound. Ayananka Bose’s cinematography is top notch. The locales of Miami are a feast for your eyes. Costumes and styling are very upmarket.

Vishal-Shekhar’s music goes well with the mood of the film. It’s young, peppy and energetic. ‘Desi Girl’ and ‘Maa Da Laadla Bigad Gaya’ are foot-tapping compositions. The latter is bound to be a rage!

Both Abhishek and John are fantabulous! Abhishek pulls out all the stops and delivers one of the finest performances of his career. His comic timing is superb! John will make guys and girls drool over his amazing physique. But, most importantly, people will sit up and notice how fine an actor John is. Both Abhishek and John compliment each other so well. In fact, had the chemistry and camaraderie been missing, the story would’ve failed to look convincing. Two thumbs up for these two guys!

Priyanka looks stunning and delivers a first-rate performance. First FASHION, now DOSTANA, Priyanka is back with a bang. Bobby Deol lends the required class to his role. No other actor would’ve looked so real while underplaying this character.

Boman Irani is sure to bring the house down, the auditorium is sure to resonate with laughter in his sequences. Kirron Kher is superb as the punjabi mom. Watch her throw a fit when she learns that her son [Abhishek] is gay and much later, when she accepts John as family. She’s remarkable! Sushmita Mukherjee, as Priyanka’s aunt, is fantastic. She’s so, so funny. Shilpa Shetty sizzles in the opening track.

On the whole, DOSTANA is a winner all the way. In terms of content, it might just prove to be a trendsetter. In terms of business, the film holds tremendous appeal for the youth. The 16 to 25 age-group would go into raptures and bonkers over this film. Its business at multiplexes mainly will be amazing. In Overseas too, the film should emerge amongst the biggest draws of 2008. DOSTANA rocks… have a blast!

Obama's victory is DiCaprio's gift

Leonardo DiCaprio, who just turned 34, says the election of Barack Obama to the post of US president is the best birthday gift he could have possibly got.

According to reports: "People keep asking me what I want for a present so I tell them I have the best birthday gift I can possible get, and that's this new president. I'm so excited." The actor celebrated his 34th birthday on Tuesday.

He was in London to promote his new movie Body Of Lies , in which he plays a CIA agent hunting a terrorist in Iraq and Jordan.

Fiercely anti-war, DiCaprio hopes that the new president will prove to be good news for Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Barack Obama's foreign policy positions are very different from the last administration. I think we are going to see some profound changes in the United States and it's going to reverberate throughout the rest of the world.

"The good thing now is that a whole new generation of young people have spoken and have voted for change and new policies, and all we can do now is support the new president and give him the tools that he needs," he said.

Despite his forthright political opinions, it's clear he hasn't been reading up on the British politicians. Asked if he had an opinion on Gordon Brown and David Cameron, he laughed: "Not right now, no. I'm still in Barack world, still reeling from that victory!"

Kidman set to play transsexual

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 · 0 comments

Nicole Kidman is set to play the world's first transsexual in an independent film starring fellow best actress Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, according to reports.

Australian beauty Kidman will star and produce The Danish Girl, a movie based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Gerda Wegener, according to entertainment industry daily The Hollywood Reporter.

Einar Wegener, who will be played by Kidman, was a male artist who underwent ground-breaking surgery to become a woman in 1931 after pretending to be a female model in a series of successful portraits painted by Gerda Wegener.

Theron, a best actress Oscar-winner for Monster, will play Gerda Wegener, the report said. The film is to be adapted from David Ebershoff's successful 2000 novel of the same name.

Kidman, who celebrated the birth of a daughter earlier this year, has not appeared on screen since last year's fantasy tale The Golden Compass. She will next be seen in Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia due for release in the United States later this month.

Rapper Akon wants to be the first black James Bond and said he would pick Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger as his love interest.

According to reports: "My ideal Bond girl would be Nicole. I think she'd be perfect. Lewis wouldn't mind if I borrowed her for a minute. He seems like a pretty secure guy. He's handsome and a world champion. I don't think he'd be worried."

Akon is even making plans to fund his own Bond venture if the present producers refuse to sign him.

He said: "A lot of people don't know that I'm heavily trained in martial arts. And when it comes to cars - that's my thing. I was raised on cars. I could do acting. It would probably take me six months to a year of training to make sure I'd get the role. I could handle that role, no problem. If I don't ever get the opportunity then I'm gonna shoot my own."

Vidya happy she's not linked to Arshad

Vidya Balan is quite relieved nowadays as she has been spared of a link-up with her co-star Arshad Warsi with whom she is shooting for Ishkiyan.

"Vidya is happy that this time the media will not be able to link her with her co-star. Arshad is her good friend and he is happily married with two kids. So she is glad that she will be spared any link-ups this time," a source said.

The two are shooting in Wai for Vishal Bharadwaj's
Ishkiyan. In the past, Vidya has been linked to all her co-stars including Shahid Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham. She was also linked to Sajid Khan, who directed her in Akshay Kumar- starrer Heyy Babby.
Vidya is having a wonderful time shooting in Wai. Unlike other actors who prefer to stay inside their vanity vans between the shots, Vidya loves spending time with nature.

A source said: "Vidya loves to be in a natural environment. She enjoys nature walks in between shots. She finds the entire experience absolutely soothing."

Madhavan to lose weight for 3 Idiots

After Abhishek Bachchan who has lost 14 kgs to look like Mani Ratnam's on -the-run fugitive in his new film, it's Mani's earlier favourite Madhavan who is required to undergo a physical melting-down.

And it's not for the love of Mani. It's for Raj Kumar Hirani. Apparently, Hirani has asked all his three leading men Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and Madhavan to "look like IIT students."

The interpretation of that instruction has been left to the individual actors. Says a source, "Aamir will lose some of that aggressively muscular look that he has acquired for Ghajini. He needs too look leaner and more athletic, as he did in Dil Chahta Hai. Playing a student at 40-plus won't be difficult for Aamir. He has done so in Rang De Basanti with great success. Sharman doesn't need to lose any weight. He looks completely in character. Madhavan needs to look more toned."

Madhavan who has temporarily shifted base to Mumbai to seriously pursue a career in Hindi cinema, has taken off for two weeks to Ashford in the UK to work on his physique for the role in 3 Idiots.

Speaking from London Maddy says: "My sister lives here in Ashford and there're very good health clinics here. Whenever I need to change around my metabolism or rework my physique for a role I head for Ashford. And at the moment I'm re-working my physique to look like a student. "

A time -frame has been set for each of the actors to get into the shape they think right for their characters.

"It's not about looking thinner or younger. All three of us need to look convincing as IIT students. How we choose to do so has been left to us," says Madhavan. Madhavan returns in two weeks to resume the shooting of Teen Patti, which got suspended when the Big B fell ill.

Saif wants four kids with Bebo

Saturday, November 8, 2008 · 0 comments

In an interview with People magazine Saif Ali Khan says that he looks forward to having "two girls and two Boys" with Kareena.

"Our living apart from each other reminds me of my mum's [Sharmila Tagore] letters that she used to write to my father [Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi] when he used to be away from home for days while playing international cricket. She used to decide on the spot where they could meet.

Since Kareena and I are not doing too many films together also, we need to be strong and have a lot of love and trust to make our relationship work. Since we stay apart from each other, it's also very exciting whenever we meet. It has kept our relationship as intoxicating as ever. People often tend to not take our relationship so seriously. So we need to be almost spiritual to make it successful.

Quantum Of Solace Movie review

James Bond is back, and this time it’s mighty personal. Daniel Craig’s craggy agent picks up exactly where he left off in another bruising thriller that leaves you feeling both drained and exhilarated.

There are hand-to-hand fights that make your eyes water and old-school stunts involving motorbikes, speedboats, jet fighters and expensive cars that give you whiplash just looking at them. Really, nobody does it better than the new 007.

What makes Marc Forster’s film such an intriguing watch is that this is the first of the 22 Bond movies where the plot flows organically from the last instalment, and Quantum of Solace looks a far stronger picture for this rare continuity.

Needless to say the plot is as forbidding as the title. After the death of his girlfriend, Vesper Lynd, at the end of Casino Royale, Bond mixes revenge and duty dangerously as he hunts down the shadowy group that blackmailed Lynd to betray him.

A link to a bank account in Haiti puts Bond on the scent of Mathieu Amalric’s chief creep and ruthless businessman, Dominic Greene. All great Bond adversaries are generously blessed with kinks and quirks and Greene is no different. Amalric has a wonderfully wormy arrogance.

His sidekick, Elvis (Anatole Taubman), sports a monkish fringe, and Tarantino bad looks. But it’s the manner in which Amalric manages to poison all trust in Bond, even from his nearest and dearest, that makes him one of the classic arch-adversaries.

Cold rage threatens to derail Bond’s mission to crack Greene’s dastardly organisation known as Quantum, and I doubt that there’s a better actor at bottling rage than Daniel Craig.

All muscles, he has defined himself as a darker and more bare-knuckle Bond than any of his elegant predecessors.

The deadpan humour is still there. And despite the occasional blasts of visceral and grisly violence, Craig is threatening to become the most popular 007 yet, certainly with the younger generation.

Even the famous Bond babes seem to be getting tougher. Olga Kurylenko’s stunning, hard-as-nails beauty, Camille, has her own private vendetta that she wants to bring to a bloody conclusion, with or without Bond’s help. And Gemma Arterton’s effortlessly foxy Agent Field appeals to the better side of the wounded anti-romantic.

“Do you know how angry I am at myself,” says the naked, raven-haired M16 agent as Bond kisses his way up her spine. But Bond rarely lets a life-threatening difference of opinion get in the way of a decent flirt.

The familiar faces returning from Casino Royale pose a far more subtle, acidic test for Bond who has to tread carefully around treacherous old friends: Jeffrey Wright’s lugubrious CIA agent Felix Leiter; Giancarlo Giannini’s silky string-puller, René Mathis; Jesper Christensen’s duplicitous Mr White; and Judi Dench, of course, as his witheringly unimpressed boss, M.

“When you can’t tell your friends from your enemies it’s time to go,” growls Dench.

Of course, Bond is having none of it. There are new necks to break and toys to play with as the action rips across Austria, Italy, and South America.

The global stakes are as precarious as ever. Amalric’s masterplan to destabilise a South American regime, install a dodgy dictator, General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio), and take control of the biggest source of fresh water in the world is fabulously cock-eyed. But that’s one of the main reasons why we can’t get enough of the greatest franchise of them all.

The director, Marc Forster, has absorbed the lucrative lessons discovered in Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale. He has also managed to pace his sequel much better. Royale felt slightly wheel-clamped by one too many longeurs. If anything, the crunching chase sequences in Quantum of Solace are even more magnificently dangerous. And the daredevil leaps and tumbles through glass roofs are just as sensational as the splintering high-speed pyrotechnics.

But it’s the amount of heartache and punishment that Craig’s new Bond absorbs that makes him look so right for our times.

Bond is no longer a work in progress. He is now the cruel, finished article.
