Terror attackshit movie business

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 ·

An eerie silence grips Mumbai's multiplexes, empty ticket counters and deserted movie halls is the aftermath of last week's terror attacks. And amid those bearing the brunt are cinema halls.

"We normally see 50-60 per cent collections from Friday onwards, but this time it went as low as seven- 10 per cent. This has mounted to over Rs 20 lakh in losses for us on a daily basis," said Devang Sampat, Cinemax Multiplexes.

With south Mumbai cinema halls like Metro and Inox being worst hit, releases like Sorry Bahi, Dostana and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye paid the price.

Mumbai's 75 multiplexes and 30 single-screens usually see 75 per cent business at the weekend. This time, it was only 35-45 leading per cent amounting to a loss of Rs 10 crore.

And feeling the pinch too Mumbai's malls. Whereas the number of footfalls at the weekend is 10,000 per mall, it was a dismal 1,000 this time around.
"There has been no response from customers. Its been four days. Nobody comes to the malls. Only people
from the mall are seen around," said Deshmukhbhai, Shop Owner, Citi Mall.

With security at both malls and multiplexes beefed up, it will take a while before shoppers and film buffs will be return with their usual vengeance.
